12 media companies have joined forces to form a “standalone join venture.” Pearl Mobile DTV company will develop a new national mobile content service. The participating companies are Belo Corp, Cox Media Group, E.W. Scripps Co., Fox, Gannett Broadcasting, Hearst Television Inc., ION Television, Media General Inc., Meredith Corp, NBC, post-Newsweek Stations Inc and Raycom Media.
Using existing broadcast spectrum, the service will let member companies provide content to mobile devices. According to a press release, the venture is designed to “complement the FCC’s National Broadband Initiative.”
