Yahoo lays off 600

Yahoo says bye-bye to 600 staffers. According to a memo from CEO Carol Bartz to employees, most of the jobs cut are from the products division, affecting about 4% of the company. Before yesterday’s layoffs, Yahoo had a global workforce of 14,100.

Among some of the company’s cost-cutting measures: shutting down Yahoo video. According to reports, any uploaded videos, user profile, ratings, favorites, and playlists will be disappear by March 14, 2011.

Rumors are that AOL is positioning itself to buy Yahoo. Several reports from Reuters and Business Week, going back as far as 9 days ago, point to a possible merger.
