NAHJ executive director resigns, cuts to follow

Iván Román, executive director of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists since 2003, has resigned. He will remain on the job and continue the day-to-day operations throughout the upcoming NAHJ Orlando convention in June.

Prior to joining NAHJ, Iván was the San Juan Bureau Chief for the Orlando Sentinel. He previously worked at the Rochester Times-Union, the San Juan Star, El Nuevo Herald, and the Miami Herald.

Current NAHJ president Michelle Salcedo sent members a message announcing Iván’s resignation, as well as that of Online At-Large officer Patricio Espinoza. Fernando Díaz, the managing editor of Hoy (Chicago) and current Region 6 director, will fill the rest of Patricio’s term.

The letter also announced that the board of directors this past weekend unanimously passed an austerity budget, reducing staff after June 30. The budget cuts expenses 15% and includes funds for a new executive director and a part-time contractor to match members with jobs.
