Austin TV personality Fred Cantú,who was ousted from his full-time anchor gig at KEYE-42 in December of last year, is now working part-time at Home Depot to make ends meet.
According to the Austin American-Statesman, “Uncle Fred,” as he’s known in town, took the Home Depot job – his first ever outside of TV and radio industry – in part for the health insurance.
Fred is still freelancing on the early morning news show at KEYE. But apparently, that job will end after Thanksgiving.
Fred worked as an anchor/reporter at KEYE (both for CBS and Telemundo) from 2002 to 2010. He was also a radio talk show host at KXBT in 2010. From 1995 to 2001, he was morning anchor for Austin ABC affiliate KVUE . He was previously news director, radio anchor and fill-in talk show host for KVET-AM/FM and KASE-FM Austin. Before that, he spent 4 years as weekend anchor at KTBC (then Austin’s CBS affiliate).
