Aranda wins 2011 World Press Photo of the Year

Spanish photographer Samuel Aranda is the winner of the 2011 World Press Photo of the Year.

The award was announced this past Friday.

The winning photo is an image of a veiled woman holding a wounded relative in her arms after a demonstration in Yemen.

Samuel took the photo on Oct. 15, 2011 in a mosque in Sanaa, Yemen, that was being used as field hospital by demonstrators protesting the rule of Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh during clashes with government forces.

He was on special assignment for The New York Times.

Originally from Barcelona, Spain, Samuel has covered the Middle East for Agence France-Presse, EFE and the NYT.

In an interview published in Dec. 2011 in the NYT blog Lens, Samuel talks about the difficulties of getting into the Yemen and being able to work in the country.
