California Latino journalist group gets new board

The Association of Latino Journalists of California, (Asociación de Periodistas Latinos de California – APLC) welcomed a new board of directors with María Luisa Arredondo, founder and Editor of Latinocalifornia.com, as the group’s president. Eileen Truax is Vice President; Cruz Alberto Méndez, Secretary; and Agustín Durán, Treasurer.

María Luisa Arredondo, new President of APLC, addresses the association's members during a luncheon on March 31, 2012.

Other board members: Ofelia de la Torre, scholarships committee; Miguel Suárez, community newspapers editor; José Morales, editor of APLC’s magazine.

APLC was founded in 2007 by the outgoing group’s president, Cruz Alberto Méndez. In 2008, shortly after the start of APLC, Méndez said in an interview that the group’s goal was to unify “Latino journalists who have been marginalized by other journalism organizations like the Chicano News Media Association and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists, who say they represent this minority, but they don’t.”

The non-profit association currently has more than 60 members.
