Sources have confirmed that MundoFox, which in March of this year announced América TeVé would be its Miami affiliate, won’t be airing its programming on WJAN – channel 41 after all. They have signed a new deal with GenTV, channel 8 to be their Miami affiliate.
Apparently, management at GenTV told staffers today of their new affiliateship and that they will begin airing new newscasts starting Monday at 5 and 10 pm. MundoFox programming has started airing today on channel 8.
Moving to GenTV is a better deal for MundoFox. Channel 8 is a high power station broadcasting in HD. América TeVé is low power and currently doesn’t have HD capabilities.
MundoFox launched on August 13, 2012, but has been unable to secure coverage in Miami, despite their affiliate agreement with América TeVé. MundoFox programming could be seen on América TeVé’s secondary channel 48 in Miami. But apparently, that wasn’t part of the deal.
América TeVé’s local programming was supposed to move to channel 48 in September, leaving the well-known 41 open for MundoFox. But that didn’t happen. After months of delays from América TeVé, an insider tells me the switch was finally going to happen Jan. 8. Employees at channel 41 today were shocked to learn that GenTV will now be the MundoFox affiliate.
GenTV, an independent channel that is part of Colombia’s Caracol Television Group, in October announced a relaunch of the station and new original programming. What will happen to that programming is now in question.
Stay tuned for more on the switch and official comments from MundoFox, GenTV and América TeVé.
