Latino USA revamps with extra airtime and new segments

NPR’s Latino USA with María Hinojosa expands to an hour starting September 6. The longest running Latino-focused program on radio, it has been on the air since 1993.  This year, María celebrates her 20th year anniversary as the show’s host.

Billed as the “new Latino USA,” the nationally syndicated show will be fast-paced and lively with varied points of view and continue to chronicle how Latinos are living in, shaping and changing America.

The show will have new contributors, including  Al Madrigal, standup comedian, actor and correspondent on “The Daily Show,” Pilar Marrero, political reporter and immigration reporter for La Opinión and Marta Moreno Vega, writer, cultural activist and “Wise Latina.”

There will be several new recurring segments, aiming to broaden the scope and story mix of Latino USA:

“Dímelo” – Latina magazine columnist Pauline Campos will offer advice on listeners’ “Latino Problems.”

“Class of 2030” – At a time when one out of four kindergarteners is Latino, the segment looks at how these students will impact the education system.

“Dearly Deported” – As deportations reach record highs, the segment will chronicle the personal stories of thousands of Latinos separated from their families because of US immigration laws.

“Somos/We Are” – The new series will present an intimate insider’s conversation about Latino identity, how Latinos self-identify, what they look like, and how others see them.

“Latino USA” is produced by The Futuro Media Group, an independent non-profit media organization led by María Hinojosa, dedicated to producing multimedia journalism.  It’s distributed by NPR.
