Recently retired anchor Ysabel Durón has been selected to receive the 2013 Purpose Prize, awarded by Encore.org, a non-profit organization that supports people over 60 who turn their skills and experience into “second acts” that contribute to society’s greater good.
Ysabel is 1 of 7 people recognized this year for the honor, and 1 of 2 who will receive a $100,000 grant.
Since its inception 8 years ago, only one Latino previously received a $100,000 Purpose Prize. Ysabel is the second.
Ysabel retired as weekend anchor of KRON-4 in San Francisco on April 14, after a 42-year television career.
10 years ago, she founded the non-profit organization that would be her “second career,” which has become her life’s work: Latinas Contra Cancer.
A cancer survivor, she has been a tireless advocate for Latinos with cancer. In 2008, she organized the first National Latino Cancer Summit, an event that brings together cancer experts, health care providers, researchers, community-based agencies and cancer survivors from around the country to learn and collaborate on the latest research and how cancer is impacting the health of the Latino community. The summit has also been held in 2010 and 2012.
Through her organization, Ysabel does some incredible work. You can help her continue her mission of raising awareness about cancer in the Latino community and increasing access to quality care for those who can’t afford it by making a donation on her site.
I have to include a disclaimer: I have known Ysabel for many years and have actively supported and promoted her work with Latinas Contra Cancer. I gave her the NAHJ President’s Award in 2006. This year, she presented me with a Gracia Award, for my small contributions to her cause.
