WFFA’s Campos to retire, Izaguirre to take over as main anchor

After 30 years as an anchor at WFAA, Gloria Campos today announced she is retiring.  She plans to anchor her final newscast on March 7.

“Yes, I am retiring on March 7! I’ve been planning for this for at least 5 years! I’ve had a wonderful, long, very successful career by any measure,” Gloria tells me. “My parents are 88-82 and in failing health so more family time is at the top of my agenda.”

Asked about her post retirement plans, she says “I don’t expect to ever work in TV news again, except maybe to fill in here at Channel 8, when and if they need me.”

Gloria Campos will retire from WFAA after 30 years as main anchor; Cynthia Izaguirre will replace her.

Gloria became the first Latino anchor at the ABC affiliate in Dallas in 1984.  In May of 2012, she renewed her contract with WFAA until the end of February of 2014, with a pay cut and reduced working hours, dropping the 6 pm newscast and only doing the 10 pm show.

WFAA-TV also announced it has promoted News 8 Daybreak anchor Cynthia Izaguirre to replace Gloria at 10 pm. She will also anchor the 5 pm newscast when she takes over for Gloria in March.

Cynthia, who was raised in Dallas, joined the station as a morning anchor in January of 2008.

How does Gloria feel about Cynthia’s promotion?

“I am very proud of Cynthia, I have tried to set a good example for her and the women in our newsroom.  I know we are both looking forward to these new beginnings in our life.”

The station says it will be recognizing Gloria’s personal and professional accomplishments over the next few weeks.
