Proclaiming its mission is “to ensure quality information is accessible and useful everywhere” and that “innovation in news leads to a more informed, more democratic world,” Google announced the creation of News Lab.
The online giant says the purpose of the new online journalism project is to “collaborate with journalists and entrepreneurs to help build the future of media.”
Google’s objective is to show how its multiple products can be useful resources to research and produce richer stories with tools such as Google Earth, Google Maps, YouTube and Fusion Tables.
Among its offerings, Google’s News Lab has online tutorials that show how to verify the authenticity of photos on Google Images and maximize data from Google Trends. The new portal also features YouTube’s Newswire, which verifies user uploaded video of breaking news.
In a blog post, Google gives its explanation for launching News Lab.
