Al Día picks up Albor Ruiz column

After a brief hiatus, columnist Albor Ruiz once again has a platform where to voice his opinions. His column will now appear in English and Spanish in Philadelphia’s Al Día two times a week.

The New York Daily News cancelled Albor’s column on January 1st after a 20-year run, citing budget cuts.

“The next day, I think, I got a call from the founder and Publisher of Al Día, Hernán Guaracao, offering me to write for his publications.”

Albor tells Media Moves that Guaracao reached out to him because he was about to start a weekly opinion section “and he told me that the timing was perfect.”

His opinions will now focus on bigger scale topics.

“My column at the Daily News was supposed to be a local one, something that never bothered me because as you know there are millions of stories and issues in New York City that are worth writing about. This one is gong to have a more national and international scope, and I really enjoying the change of pace.”

Originally from Cuba, Albor’s first two columns, which ran this past week, address issues related to this homeland. The first column tackled Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio’s Cuban identity with the title “Cruz and Rubio are as Cuban as Obama is Kenyan,” arguing “Calling these two individuals Cubans is an insult to the real ones, of course.”

His second one, titled “The Cold War is over — despite the protestations of the Rubios, Lehtinens and their ilk,” is fully loaded and sure to upset many anti-Castro U.S.-based Cubans.

“I was promised complete freedom in regard to my topics and my opinions – something that is essential for me as a columnist.”

Albor, who had been with the Daily News for over two decades when he was laid off in 2013, had reached an agreement to continue his column on a freelance basis. That ended on January 1 of this year.

Before joining the Daily News in July of 1993, Albor was the Editor-in-Chief of the bilingual newspaper El Daily News and Chief Editorial Writer and columnist at New York’s El Diario-La Prensa.
