May Sweeps: Telemundo and Univision news battle heats up in top markets

Powerhouse Univision is losing some of its steam in the local news ratings war with longtime rival Telemundo.

Nielsen 2016 May Sweeps data shows Telemundo newscasts ahead among key demos at 6 am, 6 pm and 11 pm in top U.S. Hispanic markets.

While Univision is still the leader in overall daytime and primetime viewership, it’s a different story when it comes to news.

Univision scored top spot with afternoon news at 5 and 6 pm in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco among key demos. It also reported wins at 11 pm in Los Angeles, New York, Houston and Dallas, but Univision includes ratings from the simulcast of its newscasts on Unimás.

Here’s the breakdown for May Sweeps by markets (Monday-Friday):

Telemundo 52 Los Angeles

KVEA’s Noticiero Telemundo 52 at 6 AM (Monday to Friday) was the most-watched local newscast among all other Spanish-language stations in the market, in this time period among Adults 18 to 34. The station has held this ranking since January 2016; and

Noticiero Telemundo 52 at 11 PM (Monday to Friday) was the second most-watched local newscast in the market, regardless of language among Adults 18 to 34, Adults 18 to 49, and Adults 25 to 54.

Telemundo 47 New York

WNJU’s Noticiero Telemundo 47 at 11 pm was the most-watched Spanish-language newscast among Adults 25 to 54 and the second most-watched local newscast in the market, in any language among Adults 18 to 34.

Telemundo 51 Miami

WSCV’s Noticiero Telemundo 51 at 5 am was the #1 Spanish-language newscast among Adults 18 to 34, Adults 18 to 49 and Adults 25 to 54.

Noticiero Telemundo 51 at 5:30 and 6 and 11 pm was #1, regardless of language among Adults 18 to 34, Adults 18 to 49 and Adults 25 to 54.

Telemundo Phoenix

KTAZ had the most-watched local newscast at 10 pm, among all three demographic groups. The 10 pm local newscast has been the most-watched in the market among Adults 18 to 49, for the past 10 out of 14 months.

Telemundo Denver

KDEN had the most-watched local newscasts at 4:30 and 5 pm among Adults 18 to 34, regardless of language.

Telemundo 62 Philadelphia

WWSI’s Noticiero Telemundo 62 at 6 pm was the #1 Spanish-language newscast among Adults 18 to 34, for the fifth consecutive month.

Telemundo Boston

WNEU’s Noticiero Telemundo Boston at 6 pm was the #1 Spanish-language newscast among Adults 18 to 34 and Adults 18 to 49.

Noticiero Telemundo Boston at 11 pm was #1 among Adults 18 to 49, Adults 18 to 49 and Adults 25 to 54.

Univision’s May Sweeps breakdown:

According to Univision, WXTV Univision 41 in New York claims the most-watched early and late local newscast in the country among Adults 18-49 and Adults 18-34, regardless of language; and KMEX Univision 34 in Los Angeles had the second most-watched early and late local newscast in the country among Adults 18-49 and Adults 25-54, regardless of language.

Univision stations delivered the No. 1 early local news (at 5 and 6 pm) among:

Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, San Francisco, Phoenix and Sacramento
Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Chicago, San Francisco and Sacramento
Adults 25-54 in Los Angeles, New York and San Francisco

Univision stations delivered the No. 1 late local news among:

Adults 18-34 in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas, San Francisco and Phoenix
Adults 18-49 in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas, Phoenix and Sacramento
Adults 25-54 in Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix
