Telemundo reorganizes Orlando station, lays off staff

L to R: Alex Sanchez Sobrino, Gilberto Companioni and Luis Estrada.

Several people were laid off today at Telemundo Orlando as part of what new parent company Telemundo calls a “realignment” of station operations.

WTMO was one of 13 ZGS stations Telemundo acquired for $75 million earlier this year. The deal stipulated “Telemundo’s intent to retain the majority of ZGS current employees.”

Among those laid off today were the station’s General Manager, Alex Sánchez Sobrino, News Director Gilberto Companioni, anchor/reporter Luis Estrada, Marketing Manager Elda Rivera and Research Director María Fernández.

A company spokesperson issued this statement about the changes:

“The Telemundo Station Group is reorganizing WTMO’s operations to position the station for continued future success in the rapidly changing local media landscape. While we realign the station’s operations, the station will be managed by Ozzie Martinez, SVP News, Digital and Standards for the Telemundo Station Group until a new GM is announced.”

The spokesperson would not comment further about the layoffs, but said there are plans “to hire new team members in the growth areas for the station.”
