Mike Gonzalez is leaving KAPP/KVEW in Kennewick, WA, where he has been evening anchor and news director since March 2016.
His final day at the ABC affiliate is July 18.
He jumps 103 markets to land in Phoenix, where he’ll start a new job as weekend anchor and reporter at KPNX on July 23.
“I’m excited for this new challenge in my career,” Gonzalez tells Media Moves. “KPNX is producing some of the most innovative newscasts in the country and I can’t wait to be a part of that. Phoenix is an amazing community and I’m looking forward to the diversity of people, ideas and of course amazing Hispanic food.”
A Miami native, Gonzalez has worked his way around the country. He got his start in 1999 at KOMU in Columbia as an anchor/reporter while attending graduate school at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. He spent almost six years at the NBC affiliate before moving to Nebraska as a weekend anchor and reporter at KOLN in 2004. He left Lincoln for WOWT in Omaha two years later.
His next stop was Spokane, WA, where he worked for the KXLY Broadcast Group as the main evening anchor at ABC affiliate and an investigative reporter and fill-in anchor at the CBS affiliate. He also hosted a Latin cooking show called “En La Cocina” that aired in the Northwest and across the country on Dish Network.
Gonzalez then moved to Raleigh, where he was morning anchor and managing editor at NBC affiliate WNCN-17 from 2014 to 2016, when he moved back West to join KAPP/KVEW.
