Hernandez named Director of Inclusion and Diversity at UF’s CJC

Joanna Hernandez

Today is Joanna Hernandez’s last day at CUNY as Director of Diversity Initiatives.

She’s leaving New York to join the University of Florida’s College of Journalism and Communications, where she’ll be Director of Inclusion and Diversity. She’ll also be a lecturer in the Journalism Department teaching storytelling, multimedia and digital reporting courses.

She’ll be based in Gainesville. She starts her new role on Monday, July 2.

“I love New York. Don’t get me wrong. It’s my hometown and I will always cherish it. But this is truly too good of an opportunity to turn down,” Hernandez tells Media Moves. “This opportunity makes me feel like I hit the lottery. To be back in the classroom, teaching journalism to the next generation, and also working toward inclusion and diversity, is very meaningful for me.”

Prior to joining CUNY in 2012 as Director of Career Services, Hernandez was a Multiplatform Editor at The Washington Post. She previously worked had reporting and editing roles at the New York Times Regional Group, Star-Ledger in Newark, N.J, San Francisco Examiner, Newsday, New York Daily News, and the Bridgeport Post in Connecticut.
