Telemundo is looking to attract younger Latinos to news and to do so, it plans to do it in English and on YouTube.
The network announced it will develop its first-ever English-language daily newscast to be distributed exclusively on the video online platform, thanks to a Google News Innovation (GNI) YouTube grant.
A Telemundo spokesperson would not reveal the dollar amount of the grant.
According to newly appointed SVP of Digital Media and Emerging Business Romina Rosado, it’s important for Telemundo to “reach out to your audience where it is, not where you want it to be, and US Hispanics over-index in YouTube.”
Rosado stresses the need to “reinvent the traditional broadcast news” for a multicultural, multiracial, mobile and millennial generation.
The yet-unnamed project is scheduled for launch in the third quarter of 2019 and will be the first Noticias Telemundo production to live outside a Telemundo-owned platform.
There are plans to hire staff, as well as work with the company’s current talent and resources.
Rival Univision launched an English-language newscast in September, produced by the Univision news team. The two-hour “UNews” airs on Fusion.
