SBS faces second NLRB complaint over labor violations

SAG-AFTRA SBS

Three years after employees at Spanish Broadcasting System (SBS) radio stations in Los Angeles LA voted to unionize, there is still no labor agreement.

Now, SAG-AFTRA says the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has issued a second complaint against SBS “for its continued bad-faith, surface bargaining that has no intention of getting an agreement, as well as numerous other violations.”

SAG-AFTRA accuses SBS of unfair labor practices, including unlawful discipline, exclusion from health care benefits, failure to assign work to unionized employees and threatening employees with reprisals for engaging in union activities.

The violations are included in a consolidated complaint.

Among the remedies that SAG-AFTRA is seeking through the NLRB trial are monetary compensation to affected unionized employees, instructions for SBS to maintain structured good-faith bargaining with SAG-AFTRA and bargaining expenses.

The NLRB set a trial date for October 8, 2019.

SBS was previously hit with an NRLB complaint in 2017 over unfair labor practices after firing employees in retaliation for engaging in union activity. SBS reached a settlement with SAG-AFTRA after the company reinstated “unlawfully terminated” employees and agreed to pay them back wages for the months they were unemployed.

Media Moves reached out to SBS, but did not receive a statement about the complaint.
