Luis Cruz is back at the San Diego Union-Tribune, but this time he returns as director of community and public relations.
The former reporter, anchor and news director will now promote the work of other journalists.
“I feel extremely fortunate,” Cruz tells Media Moves. “I’m very passionate about our profession. I’m outspoken about the work we do and why we do it. Promoting journalism and talking about how it can impact and help our viewers and readers is something I have been doing throughout my career. The fact that they’re paying me to do it is the only difference.”
In his new role, Cruz will also be part of U-T’s Executive Leadership team.
This is his first week on the job.
Cruz was most recently executive director of news and programming for the L.A. Times’ television cable news show on Spectrum News 1, which he helped launch earlier this year.
He previously worked at the U-T from 2013 to 2018 as executive producer and later, director of news and programming for the U-T’s cable and online television station.
Cruz has also worked as news director at KYMA in Yuma, reporter at San Diego’s KGTV, an anchor at KSNV in Las Vegas.
