Pedro Calderón has resigned as news director of Telemundo’s San Diego station.
Calderón moved to San Diego in 2017 to help launch the Telemundo 20 newscast after the company severed its affiliate agreement with Entravision.
His decision marks the end of a 33-year career in journalism that included multiple moves and roles as news director, producer and anchor. Calderón says he’s now ready to move on and focus on health and family.
“In the last two years I have had to face what I have not seen in over three decades. Both professionally and personally. The pandemic changed so much of the way we work and function. It also made a lot of us take a step back and analyze what we want for ourselves and our family,” he shared with Media Moves. “The last few months have been very hard for me and I need a change. My body is talking to me. And I see clearly that I need to make a drastic change in my life.”
He says he is “leaving a way of life” and that the daily grind of the newsroom has taken a toll on him and his family. “I want to do something that allows me to live more peacefully with my wife.” He has yet to zero in on what that may be, but doesn’t want to wander off too far from journalism’s path.
Calderón recently took some time off to deal with medical issues, but will return to the office next week.
His last day at work is currently set for August 27.
