Lulu García-Navarro has anchored her last “Weekend Edition Sunday.”

She signed off on October 17 after six years hosting the NPR program.

García-Navarro left NPR to join the New York Times Opinion Audio team, where she’ll anchor a new podcast that will explore the personal side of opinion.

The NYT says the new podcast “will present intimate and immersive stories, highlighting new perspectives and ideas” that looks at “how we come to believe what we do, and what happens when our beliefs get tested.”

In a Twitter message, García-Navarro wrote: “I am thrilled to open up a new chapter doing what I love: telling real stories about people and how they move in the world and why they think the way they do….At a time when there is so much distrust over where people’s opinions come from, this new show will explore the place where lived experience and opinion intersect. I think we are better and can connect more when we understand why people hold the views they do.”

A longtime international correspondent, she has interviewed world leaders, authors, artists and people from all walks of life.

García-Navarro joined NPR as Mexico City Bureau Chief in 2004 and moved to Baghdad in 2008, where she oversaw NPR’s Iraq coverage. She was later based in Jerusalem, leaving Israel in 2013 to open NPR’s Brazil bureau.

She has also worked at BBC World Service, Voice of America, the Associated Press Television News and AP Radio.

Born in London to Cuban and Panamanian parents, she grew up in Miami.
