Noticias Telemundo today announced a new hire and two promotions in its senior news leadership team, effective immediately.
Gabriela Tristán joins the company as SVP of news. She will oversee the editorial and production units of its news programs, including network newscast “Noticias Telemundo” and morning news show, “hoyDía.” She will also be responsible for special news programming, including primetime news specials, breaking news coverage and events.
Tristán spent her entire career at Univision, starting out as an intern before landing her first job as associate producer for Despierta América in 1997. She held several editorial and producer positions as she worked her way up to management roles.
She was part of the team that launched Univision’s public affairs show “Al Punto with Jorge Ramos” and developed the format for “Edición Digital,” the first national newscast to simultaneously air on broadcast television and stream on Facebook Live. She was promoted to VP and Executive Producer of News Production in 2016, a post she held until August 2021.
Other changes in the news leadership team include the promotion of Gemma Garcia to SVP of Digital News, responsible for leading and growing Noticias Telemundo’s digital news initiatives. She joined the network in 2016 as executive producer of “Noticias Telemundo” and was upped to VP of Network and Digital News three years later.
Garcia has led digital initiatives aimed at helping to reach new audiences, including the launch of Axios Latino, an English-language newsletter covering Latino issues in partnership with Axios, and Radar 2020, a digital English-language news and commentary show. She arrived to Telemundo from Spanish television broadcaster TVE, where she held positions as chief correspondent in New York, Italy and the Vatican and Morocco and deputy head of TVE’s news department.
Vanessa Pombo is elevated to SVP of Business Operations, News. She will manage the news division’s operations and resource allocation, responsible for finance, human resources, legal and sales. She’ll also oversee studio and field operations production needs. She joined Telemundo in 2016 as VP of production management and business operations. Before that, she was the senior director of production management at Telemundo Studios. Prior to Telemundo, Pombo was VP of Univision Studios, managing entertainment and reality productions.
Tristán, Garcia and Pombo will report to Patsy Loris, EVP of news, who arrived to Telemundo in 2019 after 30 years at Univision. She was named head of Noticias Telemundo in November, succeeding Luis Fernández, who retired at the end of 2021.
Loris took over top news executive role on January 1.
