Angel Covarrubias has started a new job as news director for Nexstar’s KIAH CW39 in Houston.
He’ll be managing newsroom staff and expanding the station’s digital and on-air market reach.
“I am truly honored and thankful to my General Manager Chris Pruitt and Nextstar Media Group for giving me the opportunity,” Covarrubias tells Media Moves. “As a naturalized citizen of this country I hope to provide an example to all young professionals that no matter your race, religion or ethnicity with integrity, commitment and passion, you can.”
Covarrubias most recently did a brief stint as a communications and digital strategist in Austin, after spending almost seven years as regional news director at Entravison in McAllen. He exited the company in December 2020.
Prior to jumping into management, Covarrubias was an anchor and reporter at Sinclair’s CBS and Telemundo stations in Austin and a reporter at WOAI San Antonio.
Earlier in his career, he also worked as an anchor and reporter at KVEO Brownsville, KLDO/KXOF in Laredo and Action10news in Corpus Christi.
