Telemundo network has executed a series of company-wide cuts – across all departments – that have left about 60 to 70 people without jobs.
Network executive Alina Falcón, SVP of Programming Planning and Scheduling, is among those hit by the workforce reduction, a high-level inside source confirmed to Media Moves.
Since her arrival to Telemundo in 2011, Falcón held a series of top management roles. She previously spent three decades at Univision.
Some on-air talent was also laid off late last week, including Freddy Lomelí, from the network’s afternoon show En Casa con Telemundo.
As part of the cuts, longtime sports anchors Karim Mendiburu and Copán Álvarez will be departing the network when their contracts end later this year. Until then, they will remain on-air.
According to the source, 2022 was a financially solid year for Comcast, boosted by Telemundo’s earnings in the last quarter, mostly due to the World Cup.
However, a drop in Q4 earnings and a business realignment strategy focusing on streaming growth for its 2023 budget prompted the company’s preventive measures in anticipation of a possible recession.
