Alejandra Matos has started a new role as managing editor for audience and content strategy at the Houston Chronicle.
According to the newspaper, she is the first Latina to hold the role and to appear on the news organization’s masthead.
Matos is in charge of overseeing the newsroom’s audience development teams and statewide content initiatives, including a nine-person Austin bureau that covers state government and politics, as well as a statewide weather team, and a data team.
Prior to being named managing editor in December, she led the audience development team at Hearst Newspapers since August 2022, working with Hearst’s premium newsrooms to increase and engage audiences across search, social and newsletters.
Matos was previously the deputy audience director at The New York Times’ Wirecutter website. Before that, she spent seven years as reporter for the Houston Chronicle.
Her past experience includes reporter jobs at the Washington Post and the Minneapolis Star Tribune.
