TelevisaUnivision has cut hundreds of jobs across Univision network over the course of Tuesday and Wednesday this week and cancelled its long-running sports show “República Deportiva,” which had been on the air almost 25 years.
El Nuevo Herald reports Univision executed about 200 layoffs.
According to inside sources, high-profile talent was laid off from news and sports at the local and network level. Among them, Univision 23 news anchor Sandra Peebles, who had worked at the station since 1999, and Félix Fernández, co-host of “República Deportiva.”
Also impacted by the cuts: Teresa Rodríguez, a network fixture since 1982, who left her “Aquí y Ahora” co-host role in 2022 to help launch and host the network’s “Univisionarios” segment honoring the contributions of Latinos in the U.S. She will reportedly continue to collaborate with Univision.
Other names of talent across the country who lost their jobs are trickling in, but won’t be included here until their exits are definitively confirmed.
The cuts also reached top level local station managers. Among the most prominent, Univision Sacramento President and GM Steve Stuck, who had been with the company for more than four decades, and Veronika Morian, President and GM of Univision Los Angeles, who was promoted to that role in 2023. She had been with Univision in various managerial roles for 20 years. Eddy Elguezábal, President and GM of Univision Orlando and Univision Tampa also lost his job.*
A Univision spokesperson would not confirm the number of layoffs, show cancellations or specific talent departures, sticking to this official statement:
“The evolution of the media landscape has required us to implement efficiencies and cost-cutting measures to meet existing demands and in turn, strengthen our business for the future. As a result, TelevisaUnivision has made the difficult decision to eliminate a small number of positions in the U.S. across various business units. We deeply value the employees affected and their contributions, and will assist and support them during this transition.”
At the same time it was implementing “efficiencies and cost-cutting measures to meet existing demands” and strengthen its future business model, TelevisaUnivision also announced it was adding an premium ad-supported tier to its ViX streaming service, in which the company has heavily invested.
