Telemundo 52 anchor Dunia Elvir was voted national president of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
She was the only candidate that made the ballot, running unopposed.
Elvir succeeds Yvette Cabrera, a senior reporter at the Center for Public Integrity, elected in 2022.
The election results and leadership handoff took place at the end of the NAHJ convention in Los Angeles on Saturday July 13, at the end of the event’s gala, during which outgoing CBS News President Ingrid Ciprián-Matthews, ABC network correspondent John Quiñones, LA Times columnist Steve Padilla and NAHJ founding member Rafael Prieto were inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame.
Elvir, currently 6 and 11 pm anchor at the Telemundo station in Los Angeles, has also served as president of the local chapter from 2022-2024 and Spanish At-Large Officer on the national board.
Also elected to the board in this year’s election: Jaime Cárdenas, who was re-elected as VP of Online; Julio-Cesar Chavez Andino, re-elected as VP of Broadcast; Nancy Preyor-Johnson, VP of Print; Andres H. Martinez,Financial Officer; Dr. Pedro Cabrera, Academic At-Large Officer; Jackie Padilla, Secretary.
All national board officers ran uncontested. According to NAHJ, they each received between 241 and 256 votes, with 1-2 write-in votes in each race.
Three seats remain open: Spanish At-Large Officer, General At-Large Officer, and Student Representative. They did not receive official nominations, leaving the incoming board to appoint members to those positions after reviewing write-in votes.
The board members will serve for the next two years.
This year’s ballot included an update to NAHJ’s bylaws, which required members’ approval. The proposed changes – among them, updates to membership classes, the ability for a president to run for two consecutive terms, and students being able to vote for regional directors, passed.
