Eli Velázquez exits, Joaquín Duro named Telemundo’s EVP of Sports

Eli Velazquez - Joaquin Duro

Telemundo today announced the departure of Eli Velázquez, the network’s executive vice president of sports and his successor, Joaquín Duro.

Velázquez, who joined Telemundo in 1999 as a producer for “Boxeo Telemundo” and rose through the ranks to the highest executive levels, will leave the company at the end of the month.

During his tenure, he led the award-winning sports division’s coverage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympics in Paris, NFL Sunday Night Football, U.S. Soccer Federation matches, Premier League and Liga MX’s Chivas de Guadalajara.

Velázquez also oversaw production for Telemundo’s FIFA World Cup tournaments after the network secured the exclusive Spanish-language broadcast rights from Univision in 2011. He played a key role in building Telemundo Deportes into a strong sports content organization across linear and digital platforms.

Duro will assume the role of EVP of Sports on October 1, reporting directly to Luis Fernandez, Chairman of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises.

In his new position, Duro will lead sports production, programming, acquisitions, operations, and multiplatform content at Telemundo Deportes, and oversee the execution of major Spanish-language event coverage, including FIFA World Cup properties and the Olympic Games, working closely with NBC Sports and Peacock.

Duro was most recently SVP of AVOD Streaming and Digital for NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises, where he managed all aspects of digital productions, monetization, and operations for AVOD streaming content across all owned and operated platforms.

His appointment marks a return to Telemundo’s sports team, where he previously contributed to the network’s multiplatform coverage of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Duro joined Telemundo in 2014 as director of digital sports and helped shape Telemundo’s digital strategy for major events such as the Olympics, U.S. presidential elections, and the Billboard Latin Music Awards.

Duro previously spent 13 years at Univision Communications, where he held various leadership roles, overseeing the production and broadcast of entertainment and sports events.
