Reporter Rob Elgas is moving up to the anchor desk at Chicago’s WLS-Channel 7.
Starting May 26, he’ll anchor ABC 7’s Eyewitness News at 4:00 pm alongside current co-anchor Linda Yu.
An Emmy-award winning journalist, he takes over for Alan Krashesky, who will replace primetime anchor Ron Magers after his retirement on May 25.
Rob’s promotion comes less than a year since he joined ABC 7 as a general assignment reporter and fill-in news anchor.
Before starting at ABC, he spent 13 years at rival NBC 5, where he anchored weekdays at 4:30 pm and reported for the 10 pm newscast.
Rob previously worked for ABC7 in El Paso from 1998 to 2002, starting as a weekend anchor before co-anchoring the morning show. He began his broadcasting career as a photographer for WICD-TV in Champaign-Urbana.

Just can’t believe that TPTB promoted Elgas instead of Ravi Bechwal or someone else – like Ben Bradley or Paul Meineke – is so shortsighted. His toothy, vacant smile does not give an aura of intelligence or confidence. Which is what you need after the departure of Ron Magers and the (well-deserved) promotion of Alan Kreshesky. Too bad you promoted the wrong person.
