Anthony Ponce anchored his final newscast at NBC 5 in Chicago this past Sunday, July 24. Shortly after signing off and leaving the station, he posted a video on Facebook titled “Why I Quit NBC: The Full Story.”
In the almost 3-minute video, Anthony shares the reasons behind his decision to resign to his anchor and reporter job after a 9-year run at WMAQ.
He confirms media critic Robert Feder’s theory that he left because he was passed over for a promotion. But he also reveals he had been moonlighting for four months as a Lyft driver and recording “one-on-one interviews” of his passengers with an ulterior motive: to launch his own podcast.
Anthony’s Facebook video has had almost 900,000 views in the two days since he posted it.
“Backseat Driver,” which he will self-produce, will debut in August.
Today, he was on WGN-Channel 9’s morning show, where his his brother Dan Ponce is an anchor, to talk about his new “storytelling experiment.”
