Univision cancels gossip show “Sal y Pimienta”

Sal y PimientaUnivision has decided to pull the plug on its Sunday gossip show “Sal y Pimienta” after a 6-year run.

Media Moves has confirmed the final show will air tomorrow, Sunday, February 12 at 7 pm.

Launched in January of 2011 at 10 pm with hosts Lourdes Stephen and Rodner Figueroa as a vehicle to chat up the network’s Sunday reality shows, “Sal y Pimienta” has had a series of issues in recent years that may have led to a decline in ratings and ultimately, its cancellation.

Figueroa was fired in 2015 after racist comments he made about Michelle Obama. Univision replaced him with Carlos Calderón and Jomari Goyso weeks later.

The show was recently moved from its 10 pm slot to 7 pm, causing a bigger dip in its ratings.

According to an inside source, Univision plans to replace the show at 7 pm with a program produced by the news department tackling immigration news and issues under the Trump administration.

  2. Univision needs to understand that not all hispanics viewers are against Trump or agree with liberals views.
    They should be more balanced with their comments and on the way the news are portrait, otherwise they will lose people that are open minded and can see far beyond they are pointed out to see.

    • Univision has been known to be a center-left broadcaster even before Trump. That should not surprise anyone who understand the Spanish-language TV business, or expect for it to be anything else. Its ratings are based on immigrant viewership and growth(for the most part), the very same people that are being hammered by the Trump administration. Many immigrants are undocumented, while others have members or friends who are in that position. Hence, it is to this audience that Univision has catered to. Indeed, not all Hispanics are against Trump, particularly those who are well or feel stablished. But Republicans have made half-hearted efforts to cater to “natural allies” and today, are in a well documented disarray that goes on beyond the “bias media”.   4. I stopped watching after lourdes stephen demonstrated her support for Donald Trump and her hypocrisy religious beliefs…… I will miss Carlos Calderon….I hope el Gordo y la flaca is next!!

    Carlos is a cork-made man, he will be back.

        • I would categorize Jorge Ramos more as an “Activist Journalist”. I doubt he is a “puppet” since he has great equity with any Spanish-language network he would choose to migrate to, or have his own consulting biz, as well as publications.

          2/3 of Hispanics are of Mexican origin. Hence, Univision, Telemundo, Azteca America, etc., will cater to this demographic. Even though I am not of Mexican origin, I always say that if a Spanish-language network caters only to Caribbean, Central and South Americans, these networks will fail(Sorry if you are not of Mex origin… but money talks!). It is the Mexican dollar that has made these Spanish-language networks (and consumer market) and as a result, TV covers their concerns: immigration and the one-way attacks on the paperless.

  7. What is so sad is the fact they hired talent for the show knowing the short lifespan, Workers that moved from the other side of the country just to be kicked out after a year. What a disgrace.
