NBC 4 New York is adding Gilma Ávalos to the station’s weekend news team.
She’ll join fellow anchor Adam Kuperstein for the 6 and 11 PM newscasts on Saturday and Sunday and will work as a general assignment and breaking news reporter on weekdays.
Her first day at WNBC is November 4.
Ávalos arrives to the NBC O&O after five years at KTVT , the CBS-owned station in Dallas, where she anchored weekday afternoon newscasts and delivered breaking news coverage.
Prior to joining KTVT, Ávalos worked as a multimedia journalist and general assignment reporter at NBC 6/WTVJ-TV in Miami.
The move to NBC 4 marks her return to New York. Ávalos began her professional career at News 12 The Bronx and helped develop the pilot that would later become News 12 en Español.
Fully bilingual, Ávalos was born in El Salvador and raised in Miami. She got her start in television at the age of 12 when she hosted “Paleokids,” a Spanish-language children’s program focusing on the world of dinosaurs for Discovery Channel Latin America.
