After a 21-year run, Azteca América ceased operations in the United States.
The network, born from a joint venture between Harry Pappas’s Telecasting and Grupo Salinas’s TV Azteca in 2000 and launched the following year on Los Angeles station KAZA-TV with the goal to compete with Univision and Telemundo, ended its rocky run today December 31, 2022.
TV Azteca cashed out its investment in 2017, when it sold its share of the network to HC2 Network, renamed Innovate Corp in 2021.
The new owners maintained a licensing agreement to broadcast Azteca’s daily shows and other programming, as well as U.S.-based staff, but started shedding many executives and employees along the way, and the exit of top leadership, amid downsizing.
HC2 sold several full power Azteca América affiliated stations in 2021 “to reduce HC2 Broadcasting’s debt.”
Scott Ronson says
Good riddance. Harry was the worst boss I ever had. Framed himself as an immigrant American success story, and maybe he was at first, but the Harry I knew was greedy, narcissistic, and an editorial control freak, an early proponent of right wing conservative bias for local news. A small time Sinclair who over-extended his reach too fast and went fiscally bankrupt, but not before he acquired our station already morally bankrupt and broke up a team of professionals he deemed liberal when they were only committed to balance. I can only hope he has lived long enough and aware enough to watch his empire of cards not just fall, but disintegrate.

This channel kept our family watching tv together. We loved Venga La Alegria which we’re not going to be able to watch unless we go to youtube. It broke our hearts to see that TV Azteca was no longer transmitting/broadcasting after December 31st. I really hope it comes back.

Dish should lower our monthly bill since one of the main channels is no longer available through them. It really a bunch of bs. Azteca American and the Azteca Movie Channel are both gone. My family and I love watching all those old time Mexican movies. Venga la Alegria and Deficil de Creer are our favorite shows. We need both channel back ASAP!!!
Yvonne Vallecillo says
I wish they never left the USA
Keith says
I wondered what happened when my channel was no longer around in Jan 2022. The writing was on the wall for some time…in 2017 they stopped broadcasting my favorite (Box Azteca)…about 2 years ago (2020) they stopped broadcasting in HD and switched to SD in Dallas. Going to SD was a sign that the next step would be a shutdown. It didn’t make sense switch from HD to SD. So the not surprised but sad that Azteca is gone.
Yolanda R. Sanchez says
Bob says
with this shut down of Azteca America can anyone confirm that the KSVN in Orem UT is not broadcasting anymore because of this?
