Fernanda Santos has been named managing editor of The 19th, and independent nonprofit newsroom founded in 2020 that reports on gender, politics and policy issues.
Santos is a longtime reporter and author, based in New York City, who has extensively covered stories about underrepresented and misrepresented communities.
She was most recently a contributing columnist for The Washington Post and editorial director at Futuro Media. She previously spent 12 years as a staff writer for The New York Times.
Santos has also worked as a professor of practice at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University and is a co-writer of the Off-Broadway musical “¡Americano!” based on the life of an Arizona Dreamer.
Santos is a writing coach in the Poynter Institute’s Power of Diverse Voices program and a lifetime member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists.
