Following distinguished careers at CNN, longtime news managers Flora Charner and Mariano Castillo have left the cable network to join the journalism faculty at Texas A&M University.
The husband and wife team, who moved from the network’s Atlanta headquarters to Texas, start their new roles as journalism professors of practice this month.
Charner, an Emmy-award winning journalist, was most recently Director of Coverage for international newsgathering at CNN. She joined CNN as a producer in Rio de Janeiro in 2015, quickly rising through the ranks at the network’s Atlanta headquarters.
Her past experience includes producer roles at Al Jazeera and the Associated Press in Rio de Janeiro.
Castillo was most recently Senior Director of News Standards and Practices at CNN, where he worked primarily with CNN en Español and CNN’s primetime shows. Previously, he worked in CNN’s editorial and story vetting unit and was a reporter for CNN Digital. He first joined CNN in 2009.
Castillo, a Texas A&M graduate, has also worked for the San Antonio Express News.
